Become a Driver

Our volunteer drivers tell us they gain enormous satisfaction from driving their passengers door-to-door to their various appointments, social activities, shopping excursions, visiting a library, friend or relative etc. They see how much the service means to our users, enriching their quality of life, enabling them to live independent, fulfilled lives.

The drivers also enjoy the camaraderie of being part of a team, supporting each other and making a new circle of friends and social contacts.

Here’s what Jon said: “I didn't anticipate how much I would gain from volunteering. Our clients are from all walks of life and I enjoy hearing all about their very varied and interesting lives. Without Community Transport many people would not be able to leave their home, so it is a very rewarding role.”

We are always grateful to hear from new volunteer drivers, who can either offer the use of their own car or drive our wheelchair-accessible minibuses.

Volunteers are always fully trained and, where they drive our minibuses, are insured through our fleet policy. Volunteers own motor policy provides cover for their vehicle. We also have employers' and public liability insurance which covers all other aspects of the activities of our volunteers. The vulnerable nature of our passengers means all volunteers are asked to undertake the appropriate Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks. Drivers using their own vehicles are reimbursed to cover their costs, currently at a rate of 45p per mile.

Our drivers, of course, have the flexibility to tell us when they are available and we schedule journeys a week in advance. If you are aged over 21 and you can spare a few hours a week, then you can help us deliver a much-needed transport service to your local community.
